Deadlift
Deadlift, that’s all there is to it.
You want a big thick. wide muscular back? Then do deadlifts.
OK, I’ll go into more detail then.
Everybody should do deadlifts for a variety of reasons but the most compelling overall reason is for posture, and keeping a strong straight back.
You see the old people getting around with hunchbacks, bent over with age? If they had done deadlifts then their spinal muscles would not have atrophied to the point that they are hunchbacked and invalid.
Office workers sittign in their chairs all day, especially computer programmers are particularly prone to a similar fate, Deadlifts once a week will keep your back feeling good and stave off those back pains your co-workers feel.
Bodybuilders want to do deadlifts to get maximum muscle growth and strength.
Deadlifts are one of the hardest exercises to do but it has many advantages over other exercises.
- Being an overall body stress your body releases stress hormones like Testosterone and HGH to help recover. Thus doing heavy compound exercises like deadlifts will help overall muscle growth
- Deadlifts straighten your back and give you good posture, good posture is attractive, a slouched posture is not.
- Deadlifts strengthen your back and helps protect against injury, how many middle age people do you know with a ‘bad back’ and back pains? How much exercise do they do?
- Deadlifts will help counterbalance the stomach stresses that an obese person suffers, though obese people should probably try to cut their body fat back as a first priority.
- Deadlifts work the thickness muscles in your back like no otehr exercise
- Deadlifts work the width muscles in your back, your lats too.
- Deadlifts work all the muscles in your back so you can go home faster.
- Tall people should do deadlifts as our posture tends to slouch a lot from talking to short people and ducking through doorways all day.
When we were younger we used to do 20 sets for our back training because the back had so many muscles in it. We used to try to target each muscle seperately and ended up spending hours in the gym. Only much later I found out that by doing Deadlifts I could work all of these muscles in one hit, then I could go on to give additional attention to the muscles that required it.
Dangers Of Deadlift
I often hear Deadlifts are dangerous for your back, well so is beating an egg if you do something stupid. Just follow these common sense rules and everything will be OK:
- Don’t lift more than you can handle, just do the movement slowly and strictly, do not try to use body weight t ohelp accelerate the movement and use heavier weights
- Keep perfect form. Do the up and down movements in a slow controlled manner, do not drop the weights
- Keep your back rigid and straight, do not Deadlift with rounded shoulders
- Deadlift in flat shoes, do not wear shoes with heels unless they are stable boots
- Do not use a lifting suit or other device designed to increase your poundages
- Did I say control the weights, do the reps slowly and in full control?
That is about it. Most of the people who say deadlifts are dangerous are lazy people who tried it once and did not like having to exert themselves.
Remember you do not have to do 1 rep max weights with Deadlifts, for the general population 100lbs would be enough for reps for general posture and problem avoidance
